The 3rd World Forum of Traditional Medicines was successfully held

On May 29-30, the Third World Traditional Medicines Forum co-organized by the World Traditional Medicine Forum (WTMF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) was held online.
At the opening ceremony, Dr. Ramón María Calduch, Vice President of the WTMF, and member of ETCMA through the Spanish association European Foundation for Complementary and Integrative Traditional Medicine (FEMTCI), offered the welcoming speech on behalf of the organization and the President Dong Zhilin.
The inauguration was attended by WHO officials and government representatives from various countries such as Dr. Zsuzsanna Jakab, Deputy Director General of the WHO, Mr. Zhang Qi, Head of the Traditional, Complementary and Integrative Medicine Unit of the WHO, Mr. Wu Zhendou, Director General of the Department of International Cooperation of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (RPChina), Dr. Rajesh Kotecha, Deputy Minister of Traditional Medicine of India, Dr. Arman Zargaran, Deputy Director of International Affairs and Office of Persian Complementary Medicine of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education of Iran, Ms Yvonne Ayongo Adu-Boahen, Director of the Department of Clinical Trials of the Food and Drug Administration, Accra, Ghana, Professor Noel Wannang, Chairman of the Committee Covid-19 and Other Infectious Diseases of West Africa, who delivered speeches.

The opening was jointly presented by Ms. Yang Yuyang and Prof. Guo Chunbiao, Vice President and General Secretary of WTMF respectively, as well as Ms. Beate Lendt from Shenzhou University of the Netherlands.
Dr Zsuzsanna Jakab, WHO Deputy Director General, began by congratulating the Forum in her speech.She noted that traditional medicine is essential to human health care and that more and more countries are legislating to recognize and regulate traditional medicine.
He explained that the World Health Organization (WHO) advocates international cooperation in traditional medicine and therefore has developed a series of documents on norms and standards of traditional medicine, guidelines and tools to support the integration of traditional medicine in systems health, particularly in primary health care.
He commented that the objectives of the WTMF are in line with the WHO strategy on traditional medicine, and we hope that the WTMF will become a platform for the exchange of information on traditional medicine from around the world, helping to achieve the goal of the WHO on universal health coverage. Finally, Dr. Jakab wished the 3rd World Forum of Traditional Medicines a great success.
Mr. Wu Zhendou, Director General of the Department of International Cooperation of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (R.P. China), gave a speech noting that in recent years the Chinese government has highlighted the importance of Chinese medicine.
He explained that the General Office of the State Council has issued various policies and measures to promote and accelerate the development of high-quality Chinese medicine. That since the COVID-19 pandemic broke out in 2020, China has used the combination of Chinese and Western medicine to prevent and control the epidemic and achieved hopeful strategic results. At the same time, he commented, traditional medicine has been actively involved in the prevention and control of the global epidemic.
The WTMF, registered in the Netherlands, has more than 8,000 members from 80 countries and regions around the world, and the organization is committed to advancing the cause of traditional medicine holistically and has played an active role, said the Managing Director Wu Zhendou. He stressed that it is of great importance to promote the mutual recognition of Eastern and Western civilizations, and to promote the role of traditional medicines in the countries.
Mr. Wu raised three points: first, make the most of the advantages of traditional medicine and promote international cooperation in the fight against the pandemic. China is willing to continue to share the experience and practices of traditional medicine in fighting the epidemic with all parties and actively participate in international cooperation in traditional medicine against the epidemic to help overcome the epidemic.
Second, to promote the development of traditional medicine and improve the health and well-being of the people of all countries. We hope that, through this World Forum on Traditional Medicine, the development of traditional medicine worldwide can be improved.
Third, deepen cooperation in traditional medicine and build a human health community. China is willing to further strengthen cooperation with WHO and relevant countries in the field of traditional medicine, make traditional medicine participate in public health emergency response, actively carry out joint research and development, provide solutions and build a community of health and well-being for all mankind.
Mr. Zhang Qi, Head of the WHO Traditional, Complementary and Integrative Medicine Unit in Geneva, gave a presentation on “Implementation of the WHO Traditional Medicine Strategy 2014-2023”.
Dr. Ramón María Calduch, member of ETCMA, also presented a presentation entitled: “The regulation of traditional, complementary and integrative medicine and its incorporation into the national health system.” Both as Keynote speakers.
Likewise, the President of ETCMA, Dr. Yair Maimon, also presented a presentation on “The scientific Evidence and Healing Effect of LCS101 (TCM Formula) in Cancer Care”, which was a success.
In addition, 43 experts and academics in the field of traditional and complementary medicine from 30 countries around the world discussed and exchanged views on traditional medicine in eight areas, including theories, research, clinical experiences, and scientific achievements of medicine. traditional and complementary in different countries. Many participants shared their experiences in applying traditional medicine to combat the infection and complications of COVID-19.
At the closing ceremony, Mr. Zhang Qi from WHO made his closing remarks. First of all, he thanked the 1,383 participants from 108 countries in 6 WHO regions for participating in this forum. He also praised the results of it. He highlighted the speech delivered by the WHO Deputy Director-General and senior government officials from different countries during the opening.
Throughout the Forum, thematic discussions were held on a well-designed agenda and different approaches to traditional, complementary and integrative medicine in response to COVID-19, with the exchange of highly enriching presentations and information.
With 43 speakers from 30 countries representing several different forms of traditional and complementary medicine, the Forum made significant progress in covering different types of traditional and complementary medicine.
This was the first time that the WHO and WTMF jointly organized this Forum, the objective of which is in line with the WHO Traditional Medicine Strategy 2014-2023. Mr. Zhang Qi congratulated the success of this 3rd World Traditional Medicines Forum and sincerely thanked all participants, especially the Forum Co-Chairs and Speakers, for their important contributions to this Forum.
He also thanked the organizing committee of this Forum for their hard and excellent work in recent months. He concluded with three fervent hopes for the World Forum for Traditional Medicines: first, to further develop its role as a high-quality and comprehensive platform, uniting healthcare professional organizations, providers and partners in the field of traditional medicine and complementary, to represent the true diversity of the community of traditional and complementary medicine.
Second, connect and coordinate different forms of traditional and complementary medicine to explore common ground, build consensus, and promote collaboration toward the same goal.
And finally, strengthen relevant research and the exchange of information in the field of traditional and complementary medicines, improve training and develop norms and standards that guarantee their efficacy, quality and safety.
